Bird Song, Flower Scent

2023 - 2024

Cut Tyvek, adhesive graphics, 3D animations, interactive augmented reality

Bird Song, Flower Scent is a four-part installation consisting of large scale cut paper, adhesive graphics, 3D animations, and augmented reality (AR) currently on view through the end of 2024 at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The installation responds to and reinterprets selected exhibits in Art Personalized, a museum collection show curated around four personality types — Adventurous, Perfectionistic, Elegant, and Fashionable.

Echoing the theme of the exhibition, Bird Song, Flower Scent creates both analog and digital experiences by dividing the space into four zones, each represents a personality type inviting the audience to participate and connect with the artworks through mindful viewing. There are furniture and seating simulating disparate interior settings, such as meditation cushions, tea room, and study, to further encourage the viewers to slow down, rest, and be present.

My long standing studio practice insists on the importance of incorporating both traditional and technological media. For this project, in addition to animation and augmented reality, I also incorporate my signature style of hand cut paper and adhesive graphics. All the motifs, such as deer, butterflies, lotus, birds, ripples, and others are selected and reinterpreted from the artifacts in Art Personalized that offer a contemporary take on tradition.
